REGULATION 4 of the Control of Asbestos at Work regulations came into force on Friday the 21^st May 2004.  However for some there is still much to be done in order to comply with the full range of responsibilities detailed in the regulation, duty holders (with responsibility for the estimated half a million non-domestic premises) will need to start addressing the task immediately if they have not already done so.

All non-domestic & commercial premises built before November 1999 are affected in some way.

Offices, Factories, Hospitals, Schools, Shops, Pubs and even communal areas of domestic properties i.e. Stairwells and entrance hallways etc. are now required to have an Asbestos survey carried out by an asbestos surveyor and an asbestos register and  management plan in force.

This important legislation tackles the biggest occupational health killer in the UK – asbestos–related disease.  Of the 5,000+ people currently dying each year from such diseases 25% have once worked in the building and maintenance trade and often would have worked unknowingly on or near to asbestos containing materials (ACM’S). However it is not only those who may work in the buildings but also members of the general public, your customers as well as your staff who must be protected.
